Venus is a Red-tailed Hawk. She contracted West Nile Virus in 2004 as a hatch-year bird and was brought into our facility for care. She progressed well and showed no clinical signs of the virus and was released. Soon after her release, she was found back on the Birds of Prey Foundation property weak and confused. The stress of hunting and surviving caused the virus to become active again and this time, Venus had suffered permanent neurological damage from the virus. She has "good days" and “bad days”. In the wild, an animal cannot have “bad days”. They become weak since they cannot hunt consistently and it makes it impossible to recover. Somehow Venus knew to come back to BOP and has been with us ever since.
