Northern Pygmy Owl
The Northern Pygmy Owl is one of the smallest owls that call Colorado home. These owls are mostly dark brown and white, with long tails, smoothly rounded heads, and piercing yellow eyes. This little owl is most active during the day and can often be seen perching on the tops of conifer trees waiting patiently for prey. They will eat small rodents but prefer songbirds. As a defensive measure, songbirds often gather to mob sitting owls until they fly away. These little owls call Colorado mountain forests home.
