Merlin

(Falco columbarius)

Description

(wingspan: 21’’-27’’) Merlins are darker in color on their backs and wings. Dark streaks cover their white chest. They have a small round head with a short beak and their feet have long toes. White bands go across the tail.

Diet

Small bird make up the majority of their diet, though they occasionally prey on insects, small rodents, and bats.

Migration

Here in Colorado, Merlins are only seen in the winter. They come down from Canada and the northern United States.

Breeding

These falcons do not build nests; they will use abandoned nests from other birds. They typically lay three to five eggs per brood. Once hatched, the babies will stay in the nest for about four weeks before fledging.
