Eastern Screech Owl

(Megascops asio)

Description

(wingspan:18’’-22’’) Eastern screech owls have feather tufts on their heads and large, bright yellow eyes. Their feathers which cover their body all the way to their toes, are gray with black and dark brown streaks. The juveniles have the same plumage as the adults.

Diet

These owls have a rather diverse range of prey. They will hunt for small insects, birds, medium to small mammals, fish, and crayfish.

Migration

These owls are in Colorado year-round.

Breeding

Screech owls are secondary cavity nesters, which means they need to find a cavity in a tree that is either natural or created by a woodpecker or a flicker. The females will lay three to seven eggs per brood, and the babies will fledge in four to five weeks.
