Volunteer Opportunities

Are you interested in volunteering for the Birds of Prey Foundation? Learn about raptors, be part of a knowledgeable and fun team and meet new people with the same interests as you, all while helping Colorado's birds of prey to soar on mended wings once again. The list of volunteer opportunities is endless, but includes the following:

  • Cleaning outdoor flight cages

  • Cleaning indoor cages at the Intensive Care Unit

  • Cleaning, feeding and spoiling our mice, rats, rabbits & quail

  • Rescue and transport of injured birds to our facility

  • Special events

  • Property maintenance

  • Cage construction and maintenance

Volunteer positions are limited and there may be a waiting list to volunteer. Our priority is to give our patients the best care possible while keeping stress to a minimum.

Wildlife rehabilitation is not glamorous! You will not always be doing hands-on work with our patients. Much of our time is spent caring for feeder animals, doing laundry, and cleaning and maintaining the facility. While the work is very rewarding, it can also be both physically and emotionally taxing.

The minimum commitment for volunteers is one four-hour shift per week, the same day and time (9am-1pm) each week throughout the year. We understand the occasional illness and vacation, but it is important that we have consistent help to keep operations running smoothly. Please consider your schedule and other commitments before signing up.

All of our operations and facilities are regulated by Colorado Parks and Wildlife and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. We are a hands-off facility and only handle birds when necessary.

Volunteer requirements:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.

  • Complete an application and interview.

  • Commit to one 4-hour shift per week, the same day and time (9am to 1pm) every week.

  • Volunteers must be able to meet the physical demands of their job. These demands include the ability to lift a minimum of 25 pounds, as well as repetitive bending, squatting, and lifting.

  • Ability to work in the elements (heat and cold).

  • Make a one-time donation of $20.00 for volunteer orientation costs.

Note: There is currently a waitlist for Saturdays and Sundays. If you submit an application for these days, it may be several months or longer before you will be able to start volunteering.
